News >> Chinese Scientist Create Rain
5/6/2006 Beijing (AP)-- China says it's been making rain again. The official Chinese news agency says weather specialists fired seven rocket shells loaded with silver iodide into the clouds to engineer Beijing's heaviest rainfall of the year.
The agency says as much as four-tenths of an inch of rain fell to help alleviate drought and remove dust from the air.
Earlier this year, scientists generated another rainstorm to clear the air after some of the fiercest dust storms in years. Although unusual in many parts of the world, China has used artificial rainmaking for decades against drought in the northern part of the country.
