Houston News:
The four city hall workers accused in the city hall scandal are now indefinitely suspended. Each met with the city's chief administrative officer at city hall Tuesday and learned their fate this morning, reports Houston News.
The four staffers -- Theresa Orta, Christopher Mays, Florence Watkins, and Rosita Hernandez -- worked in Mayor Pro Tem Carol Alvarado's office. They're accused of taking $143,000 in improper bonuses In the chief administrative officer's eyes, all four couldn't keep their jobs.
"Clearly some of the employees were more involved, more culpable, in the events that took place," said Chief Administrative Officer Anthony Hall. "But it was our judgment, my recommendation, that the mayor ultimately sustain that none of them could be a judge to have operated under city rules and procedures."
The mayor himself signed the letters recommending the indefinite suspension early Wednesday morning. We talked to the attorney representing Hernandez, who was the head of the mayor pro tem's office at the time the improper bonuses were given out. He told us he and his client will be at city hall to receive the suspension letter later today.
As for what happens with Alvarado, she stepped down two days ago temporarily. Right now, Michael Berry is the acting mayor pro tem.
The employees have ten days to appeal their indefinite suspension. After that, they have 30 days to schedule a civil service hearing, which is standard procedure for city employees. They will be paid for today, but beginning tomorrow, it's an unpaid suspension.
