Houston News: Tensions Flare Up at Local Houston High School
Tensions are boiling over at Westfield High School. A number of fights, including one Wednesday morning, have caused some parents to yank their kids out of the school, reports Houston News. Parents believe tensions at the school in Spring arise from bad blood between local students and those who have moved here from New Orleans.
The district confirms there was a fight Wednesday morning at Westfield High School on Ella near FM 1960. They say it was between two female students and occurred before classes began.
Several New Orleans evacuees said they were upset about the ongoing tensions between New Orleans and Houston students. They say there were several fights last week. Some of the parents even said they did not want their children to go back inside the school. They felt more could be done to bring the students together.
"It just makes me feel bad that I got to come out here and be treated like this when I just left a storm," said Westfield student Jerome Alexander. "We will insist on children obeying the rules, following the rules. We will not tolerate, we will not accept fighting. We will not accept disruptions. We will not accept students not obeying the requirements of the teachers," said Spring ISD Superintendent Ralph Draper. "We want to encourage parents, if they have concerns, to communicate that at the campus level, and if those things cannot be resolved, to appeal them beyond the campus level through the proper channels."
